The Legacy & Literary Project: Markos Synodinos (1933–2021)

Born on the rugged, timeless island of Amorgos and later making his home in Alimos—the birthplace of Thucydides—Markos Synodinos spent his life in relentless pursuit of truth, peace, and a more just society. Shaped decisively by the Second World War and years at sea on merchant ships, he developed a profound understanding of humanity, publishing eighteen books of poetry and prose that echoed the traditions of the great classical writers.

Beyond his prolific literary contributions, Markos embodied the ancient Hellenic spirit and civic virtue. Holding a position of significant professional authority where he was offered bribes dozens of times, he remained fiercely ethical, honest, and incorruptible. He never accepted a compromised path, instead choosing to help anyone who crossed his journey. His deep, lifelong devotion to philosophy and knowledge shaped a unique perspective on truth, wisdom, and the human condition.

The Ongoing Literary Project

To honor his monumental contribution to Greek letters and philosophy, our current philanthropic and cultural focus centers on preserving and expanding his legacy for the global English-speaking community:

Editing His First Works: Meticulously reviewing, organizing, and preparing his earliest foundational poetry and prose—including his epic masterpiece Ο λυράρης βασιλιάς (The Lyre-Playing King)—for modern publication.

Translation into English: Translating his profound poetic and philosophical works into English to bridge his timeless message of peace, virtue, and truth with international readers, ensuring his voice continues to resonate far beyond the shores of Greece.

Empowering Amorgos Writers: Expanding our philanthropic and educational mission to teach aspiring writers on the island of Amorgos how to structure, craft, and write a novel based on professional international standards.
